Teens Saving Pets, part 3: A 14-year-old fundraising dynamo

hayden2.JPG

Hayden Whitt

In previous weeks I’ve written about young recipients of Dosomething.org Animal Action Grants, including 17-year-old Amanda Smith, who is helping to save abandoned horses in Minnesota, and 10-year-old Maggie Maxwell, whose Project H.O.P.E. is raising awareness of homeless pets in Texas.

This week, meet 14-year-old Texan Hayden Whitt, who not only volunteers at his local shelter, but raises money for critical supplies and places adoption ads in local newspapers. (Read more about Hayden’s project here.)

What is your project?
I organized a supply and money drive to benefit my local animal shelter. The drive yielded three truckloads of supplies, money to help care for medical attention for the shelter animals and money to help fund ads for pet adoptions.

How did your passion for animals start?
My family and I have volunteered at the animal shelter for over two years now.

How did you know that this is what you wanted to do to help animals?
Volunteering at the shelter for the last two years made me realize how much the animals needed help.

What are some obstacles that you’re facing with your project and how do you plan to overcome them?
The major obstacle is finding people to adopt pets.

How do you plan to use the Animal Grant from Dosomething.org to further the work of your project?
Some
of the money from the grant is going to pay for a ad in our local paper
explaining the big need for pet adoptions and will show pets up for
adoption.

What message would you give anyone who is looking to help animals,
but doesn’t know where to start?

Volunteer at your local shelter.

How else has Dosomething.org helped your project and in what ways do
you think this site is beneficial to teens everywhere?

Dosomething.org
is a really cool site and hopefully will make other teens start
volunteering and helping others.

Thank you! I am so proud of all your accomplishments! You, Maggie and Amanda truly represent all the young people working to improve their world.

Want to Meet Others Who Love Pits Just As Much As You Do?

Here’s an oppurtunity to meet up with other pit lovers within the canine community. Instead of walking alone join a “group walk” within a near by neighborhood to allow you and your dog to become more social around others dogs and dogs owner. Ever wanted to know how to responsibly rescue pits? Attend a rescue Pit-Ed training class and become involve  with rescuing Pits! Like to blog about issues that are occuring with Pits today? You can post a weekly blog responding to  their weekly disscussion. All of these can be done at Meetup.com where you can and your Pit can become more involve within the Pit canine community.

Breaking Down Sacramento County’s Dog License Code

With all the hype that was generated for or against the State of California’s “Dangerous Dogs” bill back in 2005, we wondered how the final legislation affected Sacramento dog owners. So, we went straight to LexisNexis and found Sacramento County’s Animal Ordinances. Title 8, Chapeter 8.24 affects the licensing of dogs and cats. While it doesn’t specifically mention pitbull terriers as a dangerous breed, it does state that all dogs in the county must be licensed. We were shocked to find out that “unsterilized” dogs must pay the full license fee. You can get the fee waived or reduced to less than half if your dog is neutered or AKC/UKC/ADB registered, a working ranch dog. Specifics and definitions can be found on the site.

We find it funny that while the site makes no mention of how much the license will cost with or without the waivers, it does clearly list the financial penalties for violators. Generically, the first offense will cost you $100. If you lie about breeding your dog, the first offense balloons to $500. Don’t lie.

As a side note, there is a dangerous animals ordinance (Title 8, Chapter 34), but it does not refer to any specific breed, rather it defines behaviors of the animal and responsibilities of the owners.

The FDA and Pet Food Melamine Contamination

If you are still concerned about that pet food contamination scare that bubbled last year, you can still get up-to-date information from the US FDA’s official website.  Last updated Feb 2008, it pretty much assures us that the scare is over. the Chinese companies responsible were indicted by a federal grand jury and all subsequent foods have been tested as safe.

What was that all about anyway? How did so many of the brands of pet food we use everyday were found to poison, and in some cases kill, our beloved four-legged companions?

In short, a company in China that produces vegetable protein ingredients for food and feed tried to cut corners by substituting nutritional protien with a cheap manufacturing surpluss material called melamine. If it sounds familiar, think closet organizers and cabinets.   When tested for nutritional value, melamine will result in a false-positive for protein, even though it contains no nutritional value.  The melamine manufacturer sold the surpluss waste dirt cheap to avoid having to pay disposal costs, and the vegetable proten company took advantage of the steep savings.

To find out more info, included links to news articles, FAQs, list of recalled pet food brands, and the official findings, visit the US FDA page.
